Tue 4-Oct-97: As you may know I am carrying at Garbo also the main
file lists of some other archive sites, partly in order to have
myself a quick access to them from Garbo. The lists are fetched to
Garbo by an automatic script once a week. The current situation is
listed below. One comment. I am discontinuing of trying to get
updates of the Coast to Coast lists. It would seem that in these
days it is almost impossible to get material from Coast to Coast as
you can see by looking at the dates of the file lists. (The
datestamps at Garbo are set to reflect the most recent file within

A general note. The maintenance of this list is discontinued. This
is the last update of the list. There are several reasons for the
abandoning:
1) In these days the WWW search engines can locate sites and files
for you. The list is not needed as much as previously.
2) With a few exceptions (such as Garbo and Simtel.Net) program
distribution is getting more decentralized to authors' own sites.
3) ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/doc-net/ftp-list.zip is more extensive.
4) I have lately not been able to allocate sufficient time to
maintain this list as carefully as I would liked. I do not
foresee that to change in the future.
The copyright (c) of this list stays with the author, Prof. Timo

Wed 15-Oct-97: Garbo program archives include a fairly large
astronomy images section to enhance interest in science. The
section is at it best when using http://garbo.uwasa.fi/Astro.html.
Even if it is in a way entertaining, because I have tried to keep
also visuality in mind when selecting the images, this material
serves a very serious purpose. It tries to lure people to get
interested in science. We are a remote university and along making
ourselves known the underlying goal of Garbo is the enhancement of
skills, rational knowledge and scientific thinking. The astronomy
related gifs can make people think of these matters and to realize
that we live on a planet with limited resources. They hopefully make
users better appreciate the global nature of society, and sadly the
fact that in the end the unheeded population growth can and will put
an end to the modern culture on our only Earth. I have obtained the

lectures "Managing the Doctoral Thesis" in the Graduate School of
Finance and Financial Accounting jointly set up by the Finance
department of the Helsinki Swedish School of Economics, the
Accounting and Finance Department of the Helsinki School of

Garbo I have move all the pending MS-DOS files from the /pc/incoming
queue to the /pc/queue directory where they are publicly available.
All the files have been virus-checked, but they have not otherwise
been tested. The availability of the files in /pc/queue does not
guarantee final acceptance to our archives. My regrets for the facts
of our busy existence.
